DISC SPRINGS
IN APPLICATION
From the multitude of possible disc spring applications, these few examples are explained below.
Turbochargers for automobiles
For turbocharger applications the disc springs work in tandem with a heat shield. Whereas the disc spring is responsible for the axial equilibrium, the heat shield is a thermal buffer against the housing.
Shock absorbers
The disc springs are preloaded in shock absorbers with defined force peaks in order to be able to adjust the desired cushioning level.
Brake force amplifier
The disc springs have the function of amplifying the braking force in a major brake cylinder. The disc springs enable a faster braking time and avoid unnecessary brake usage when the brake is applied.
Stationary railway clamps
The disc springs function by enabling the brake pads to be reset after braking. Besides this, the cushioning effect of the disc springs suppresses the vibrations that occur as a result of the braking process and thus provides a noise reduction.
Ski lift cable clamps
The spring stack creates a safe fixing of the clamp on the towing cable of the cable car. The cable cars can be easily uncoupled at the top and bottom stations and then refitted. Differences of the cable diameter are compensated by traction.
Emergency brakes in elevators
The disc springs assembled as a stack have the function of an energy accumulator. In an emergency, this energy accumulator is released and an elevator braking system prevents an unplanned elevator drop. In this case, the disc spring stacks press against the brake shoes which in turn press against the brake disk (operating principle of a disk brake).
Sliding hub in conveyor drives
The disc springs work on the basis of friction in loadholding clutches. This means that the attached load in a conveyor drive cannot run freely but rather works against the resistance of the clutch. Sliding hubs, for example, belong in this category of limiters.
Percussion drilling machine
This application of disc springs is in the clutch of a pneumatic drill. It functions by supporting the bevel gear in the clutch of the pneumatic drill.
Stamping machines
Disc springs are used as a spring set in a stripper, pressing down the merging strips. When reemerging, the stripping forces between the material and the stamp must be overcome.
Spindles
Disc springs are used as a stack, fixing the drill or the milling tool in the collet of the milling machine to ensure that this can operate in a highly precise and reliable manner. The disc spring stack is hydraulically actuated when changing the tools.
Offshore drills
Very large disc springs are in use in offshore drilling machines involved in ramming the anchorage of offshore windpower stations into the seabed. They help spread the shock impulses and increase effectiveness.
Safety valves
The disc springs, assembled as a disc spring set, have the function of power storage. In the case of overload, the valves open to prevent damage to the other components in a pipeline system.
